Probably it was the first experience, for the legendary sitar player Pt.Ravi Shankar, in his illustrious musical career, when he had to drop his sitar on floor of a jam-packed concert in Delhi for a young boy - Zakir Hussian, the genius tabla maestro .
Before that concert at Modern School, Delhi, people had never experienced or even imagined that a tabla could anchor or lead the show alone. The reason is obvious - conventionally tabla is considered or meant for supporting the main player, either vocal or instrumental. So, what he did there was simply unimaginative and unconventional, where he instead of waiting or following others, he was playing like a main musician. The urge inside him, and the way people were enjoying him, pushed other greats like Pt. Ravi Shaker(the great sitar player), Ustad Ali Akbar Khan(the great sarod player), and Zakir's father Ustad Alla Rakha(the great tabla player) on back foot. They started simply supporting him to play - the way he wanted. And then he started launching a composition after composition and enthralled the entire audience like never before.
Not a long ago, tabla player used to take the back seat, and definitely never used to be in the same line, where the other main players in the musical concerts or shows play. Zakir Hussain changed the face of this instrument and its player forever. Millions and millions of his fans, all over the world , say the same thing. Enjoy this documentary to experience...
